CONSUMER PRICES UP 2.9% IN APRIL 2026: COST OF FUEL, FOOD AND ELECTRICITY UP

According to the latest data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize,  consumer prices in April 2026 rose moderately but with sharp pressures in fuel, food, health, and utilities, signaling a cost-of-living squeeze that businesses and households can no longer ignore.

Inflation snapshot
The All-Items Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 123.2 in April 2026, up from 119.6 a year earlier, putting national inflation at 2.9 percent for the month.

On a month-over-month basis, prices climbed 1.0 percent between March and April 2026, indicating that price pressures are not only persistent year-on-year but also accelerating in the short term.

For the first four months of 2026, the year-to-date inflation rate stands at 1.4 percent, driven mainly by food, housing and utilities, restaurants, transport, and health-related costs.

Key cost drivers for businesses
Transport costs jumped 8.0 percent year-on-year, reflecting broad-based increases in all motor fuels: diesel rose by $3.02 per gallon (to $14.68), regular gasoline by $1.89 (to $13.92), and premium gasoline by $1.46 (to $14.71).

Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels rose 2.0 percent, largely due to higher electricity tariffs implemented at the start of 2026 and an $8.84 increase in the price of a 100-pound LPG cylinder (to $136.50).

Restaurants and Accommodation Services posted a 3.1 percent inflation rate, signalling rising operating costs in food service and tourism-facing establishments.

Health costs climbed 3.3 percent, driven by higher prices for doctor’s visits, medicinal products, and medical procedures, adding pressure to employers’ medical and benefits budgets.

Food and household consumption
The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category rose by 2.6 percent, with meats (pork, beef, poultry) up 3.9 percent, sugar up 16.1 percent, and fresh fruits like limes and avocados up 9.7 percent.

Non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.5 percent, reflecting higher prices for instant coffee (11.5 percent), fruit and vegetable juices (3.0 percent), purified water (1.2 percent), and soft drinks (1.0 percent).

At the basket level, some staples such as ground beef, beef steak, stew pork, chicken, whole fish, milk, apples, grapes, and LPG all registered notable price increases, while items like tomatoes, okra, black beans, and some root crops and fruits recorded modest declines.

Regional and sectoral nuances
Among municipalities, Orange Walk Town recorded the highest inflation at 4.2 percent, driven by above-average increases in food, beverages, medical services, and restaurant and café prices.

Belize City posted the lowest inflation rate at 2.4 percent, with relatively smaller increases in food, non-alcoholic beverages, and recreational activities such as night club and fair entrance fees.

Information and Communication was the only major category to decline, falling 0.8 percent year-on-year due to lower prices for mobile phone handsets, partially offsetting cost pressures elsewhere in household and business budgets.

Business implications for 2026
Rising fuel and utility costs are set to keep logistics, transportation, and energy-intensive operations under pressure, forcing firms to revisit pricing, routing, and efficiency strategies.

Food service, hospitality, and health-related businesses face higher input and service costs, which may translate into tighter margins if they absorb increases, or softer demand if they pass them on to consumers.

With year-to-date inflation at 1.4 percent and short-term monthly inflation at 1.0 percent, businesses should treat 2026 as a year of moderate but broad-based inflation, planning for continued cost pass-through, wage discussions, and productivity improvements to protect profitability.
